The newly-expanded Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at UW-Madison invites papers from current graduate students on topics related to our theme of surroundings. We encourage submissions from students affiliated with departments that surround and touch upon any aspect of the ancient world. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:
· Legal and social institutions shaping human behavior
·The world conceived as having centers and edges
· Barbarians and other outsiders
· Humanity and the natural environment
These are only a few examples, and are not meant to exhaust the possible topics that would fit under our theme. We welcome papers from any discipline (history, philology, philosophy, material culture, etc.) and any era of the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world.
The keynote address will be delivered by Carol Dougherty, Wellesley College.
