Images and Emperors in the Fourth Century AD - 17-18-19/09/2015, Ravenstein (Netherlands)

This conference will discuss a topic that in the past few years has attracted a growing attention, namely the perception an presentation of the Roman emperor / emperorship. The topic will be studied by scholars working on rhetoric, panegyric and historiography of the later Roman period from the novel perspective of Imagology. The fourth century is particularly apt to study developments and processes of cultural adaptation in imperial presentation, as changes were rapidly evolving in an empire that changed from a traditionally pagan to a mainly Christian society in the course of eight decades. Recent studies in Roman emperorship have seen a rise in interest in how the emperor was presented within the tradition of Roman emperorship. The point of departure of most studies, either implicitly or explicitly, is that the emperor cultivated a kind of ‘self-presentation’, as if he was aware of and actively influencing the image the inhabitants of the Roman empire had of the emperor, or emperorship in general. This conference will further explore the question of agency in the creation of imperial images.
