Antiquity and the History of Ideas in Eighteenth-Century Europe - 04/04/2016, Edinburgh (Scotland)

04.01.2016

An Interdisciplinary Conference, University of Edinburgh

'Antiquity and the History of Ideas in Eighteenth-Century Europe' is a one-day interdisciplinary conference to be hosted by the University of Edinburgh on 4 April 2016.

Eighteenth-century Europe is frequently cited as the 'birthplace of modernity'. Yet scholars have long recognised that the ancient world exerted a profound impact on the European 'Enlightenment'. By either contrast or identification, contemporaries appealed to antiquity - in its classical, Christian, and extra-European guises - in their engagement with a variety of religious, political, philosophical, historical, literary, and cultural debates.

This conference seeks to build on the rich and diverse range of scholarship produced in this field by providing an interdisciplinary forum for researchers in departments including History, Classics, and Theology to discuss their work. In so doing, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of the European engagement with antiquity, and thus also of the central intellectual concerns of eighteenth-century thought and 'enlightened' culture.

The conference will take place in New College and will consist of three panels followed by a key-note address from Dr Anthony Ossa-Richardson of the University of Southampton.
