The WCC is pleased to announce our first major event, ‘Classics and Feminist Pedagogy: Practical Tips for Teaching’, which will take place on Friday 29th July at the University of Birmingham.
This one-day event will cover the practical essentials of what it means to teach according to a feminist pedagogy. Topics to be covered include an introduction to feminist pedagogy in classics and ancient history, teaching sensitive topics as well as practical advice for incorporating the voices of women from the ancient world into both teaching and scholarship. Time will also be devoted to discussion, both in breakout groups and as a collective, in order to facilitate the sharing of experience, concerns, and resources. Confirmed speakers include Liz Gloyn, Fiona McHardy, Helen King, Claire Millington, and Holly Ranger.
We are also reserving time during the day's schedule for a series of short (five-minute) spotlight talks by delegates. Through this session, we hope to provide a chance for delegates to share experiences of utilising feminist scholarship and/or incorporating female voices into their teaching practice. If you would like to volunteer to give one of these talks, please indicate this on the registration form, and we will be in touch with more information. If you would like to know more before committing, please contact Ellie Mackin (email@example.com) The deadline for expressing interest is 5pm on Friday 15th July.
Please register for the launch event at http://goo.gl/forms/wu4IvR5ZkznNlTWY2, by 5pm on Friday 22nd July. Please note that spaces are limited, and preference will be given to current PhD candidates and early career academics who do not have a permanent post. Registration will be free for WCC members (join here:https://womensclassicalcommittee.wordpress.com/about/join-us/), and non-members will be asked to make a £5 contribution towards the costs of the event. Lunch and tea/coffee will be provided. (Please note: student and unwaged membership subscriptions to the WCC UK are also £5).
A provisional programme for the day is available at https://womensclassicalcommittee.wordpress.com/aims-and-activities/classics-and-feminist-pedagogy-practical-tips-for-teaching/ and will be updated regularly.
