Roman History at the Crossroads? An INSET day on Roman History at A-level - 19/11/2016, Basingstoke

With a major revision of the specifications for Ancient History A-level currently being undertaken, the teaching of Greek and Roman history is at something of a crossroads. The future of the discipline is very much in the hands of those teachers who take up the opportunities to which the new specifications rise. The emphasis at this INSET day will be on the teaching of Roman history at A-level and beyond, and we will share our experiences of fulfilling, engaging, practices. What needs to be done to reshape practices and resources so that they are compatible with the new specifications? We explore ways to approach period-based and thematic topics, how to create and share resources, how to tackle tricky and intricate topics, and how to deploy sources in the interpretation of history. As ever, teachers aspire to integrating ancient texts and material culture within history in a way that engages students and instils enthusiasm for the ancient world. We will consider the deployment of new technology in the teaching of material culture, and we will investigate strategies which might enable teachers to bridge the gap between school and university by contributing to the development of independent learning.
