CALL:

We are delighted to announce that we are now accepting submissions for 2017’s Annual Meeting of Postgraduates in Ancient Literature (AMPAL), which will be held on the 22nd-23rd of June at the University of Liverpool, UK.

AMPAL is one of the largest postgraduate conferences in the UK.  Attracting speakers and attendees from all over the world, AMPAL offers a valuable forum for students to present, gain peer feedback on their work, and meet like-minded individuals to develop their research networks.

The theme for this year’s conference is ‘TRANSFORMATION’.

Transformation is a major, if somewhat under-explored, theme which pervades much of the ancient literary corpus.  The broad theme of transformation enjoys pan-generic treatment, and surfaces in ancient historical, philosophical, poetic, and rhetorical works.  This theme not only celebrates the diverse and ever-evolving areas explored in our study of ancient literature, but also reflects the pathways and methodologies used in these endeavours, and the future interdisciplinary potential of the subject.  This year, in recognition of the multi-disciplinary strengths of the Department of Archaeology, Classics, and Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, we are especially keen to encourage submissions relating to the rich literary traditions of other ancient languages, in addition to Latin and Greek. We encourage broad, diverse, and exciting interpretations of the theme of transformation in Ancient Literature.

Some suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

-Themes and motifs of transformation

-Transforming characters (character development and presentation)

-Transformations of genre, form, and style

-Cultural exchange and literary transformation

-Transforming sexuality and gender in Ancient Literature

-The transformative impacts of science and religion on Ancient Literature

-Transforming Ancient Literature in translation

-Transforming theoretical approaches to Ancient Literature

-Transforming Ancient Literature using Digital Humanities tools

We welcome abstracts of up to 350 words for 15-20 minute papers.  All abstracts must be sent in PDF format to ampal.2017.liverpool@gmail.com by no later than 5pm GMT on  April 14th 2017.  All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submission by MIDNIGHT April 14th 2017.  We will also accept proposals for complete panels of up to 3 papers.  Please contact the conference team using the email address above for more information.

To aid our anonymous assessment of all abstracts, please include only the title of your proposed paper in the PDF document.  Please include name, current degree programme, and current institution in the main body of your submission email.

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact the conference team at ampal.2017.liverpool@gmail.com.  If you would like to stay up to date with exciting AMPAL news and announcements in the run up to the conference, you can find full details of our activities here:
