CALL:

Many studies have been devoted to Aristotle’s dialectic and methodology in recent years. Scholars used to maintain that Aristotle’s syllogistic (as is outlined in the Prior Analytics) is a new logic that replaces Aristotle’s early dialectical method. In recent years, however, a new scholarly consensus emerged and Aristotle’s dialectic is no longer regarded as an early device borrowed from Plato and from the Academy, but as a tool which Aristotle will use throughout his career. But what is Aristotle’s dialectic?

In order to answer this question, we could look at the Stagirite’s theory of dialectic, as it is outlined mainly in the Topics, or at his practice of dialectic. In this conference, we intend to pursue the second strategy. We encourage submissions that engage with arguments scattered in Aristotle’s scientific treatises, if these arguments display dialectical features (according to a definition of “dialectic” that the contributor is asked to outline and that is not necessarily consistent with Aristotle’s own ‘theory’ of dialectic).

We welcome papers on Aristotle’s Physics and Metaphysics as well as on the zoological, biological, and psychological treatises. With this conference, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of Aristotle’s method in his scientific treatises.
