The armed conflict in Syria, which began in March 2011 and escalated dramatically in the following years, led to an appalling degradation of humanitarian conditions and the destruction of Syria’s exceptional archaeological, urban, and architectural heritage, among them some of the most well-known monuments of Palmyra in 2015. Since 2017, The University of Lausanne (Switzerland) has launched an International project offering the possibility to digitize archeological archives, to produce 3D models and to create a Virtual Reality experience of the destroyed temple of Baalshamîn, which will be presented in this
workshop, but there are a number of various efforts that have been undertaken in recent years in collecting, archiving, and making publicly accessible the archaeological documentation of Palmyra.
In this workshop, we hope to bring together scholars engaged or interested in all aspects of cultural heritage issues, problems, and management related to the archaeological documentation, preservation, reconstruction, and protection of Palmyra, to share their experiences, to discuss approaches, and to learn about current initiatives and efforts as well as future strategies, including UNESCO’s recent recommendations for the protection and preservation of the World Heritage Site Palmyra. We particularly encourage proposals for papers
focusing on the problems of cultural heritage management from the perspective of local archaeologists as well as of colleagues who have been working in Palmyra, or been able to visit the site in most recent years, but we should remind any participant to this workshop that the recently imposed USA travel restrictions for citizens from various countries in the Near East are still in place, as much as similar restrictions for travelers eligible for the Visa Waiver Program; see the travel visa alerts on the following ASOR websites: http://www.asor.org/am/rules-for-participation/ and http://www.asor.org/am/travel-San+Diego (not yet updated for the Boston 2020 meeting!).
